I don’t know the Uber management well, but I don’t think that Logan Green over at Lyft fits your profile at all. And I have yet to meet a driver who has complained. I am sure they exist, but I haven’t found one. I haven’t been looking for people who like Uber and Lyft, I just ask them a few questions every time I take a ride: How long have you been doing this? How do you like it? What were you doing before?

A lot of the people who say “these are terrible jobs” don’t ask the last question. Compared to what? In almost every case, the previous job was worse.

That isn’t to say that these jobs can’t be improved. They can and must be improved. But to start with, there are models here that can potentially be better than the old model, both for customers and for workers.

A lot of the people complaining about the downside of these jobs have an agenda — to protect the existing industry. I say we create a new industry, and hold its feet to the fire to improve the things that aren’t right about it, rather than buying the arguments of those who see change as a threat.

Every industry has good companies and bad companies. I think our job is to call out both the bad and the good, and work to get more of the good and less of the bad in our society.
